Earthquake in Mexico by Jorge Rivera

As if we haven’t had enough earthquakes of late…Two are left dead after one of the strongest earthquakes in decades in México (article in Spanish).
The 7.2 earthquake in the North West of México near Mexicali occurred at 3:40 pm, Sunday, and shook buildings as far away as Los Angeles, CA, Phoenix, AZ, and Las Vegas, NV. At least 100 persons are reported injured.

Julieta Venegas – Otra Cosa

Julieta Venegas - Otra Cosa

¡JULIETA, TE QUIERO MUCHO!

Julieta Venegas’ new disc, Otra Cosa was released today!

YEAH!!

I’m listening now, and, it’s AWESOME!!!
Perhaps later I’ll give a more complete review…right now, I’m too busy working, and, ENJOYING THIS MUSIC!

UPDATE:
Okay, I’m back to give you my thoughts on “Otra Cosa” after listening to the disc no less than 3 times in its entirety today.
On one hand, with the name “Otra Cosa” (meaning [an]Other Thing in English), one might expect something a little different, something surprising and new.
The truth is, however, that Julieta has not, in this latest disc, deviated from the path that has already made her a great success.
Of course, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?
“Otra Cosa” (other thing) is replete with the same well-crafted, catchy, smart tunes we’ve come to expect from Mexican pop-star and super-cutie, Julieta Venegas. It’s GREAT music with catchy, witty, fun, heartfelt, and sometimes insightful lyrics.
Existing fans will NOT be disappointed, no horrific departures from the know or unpleasant suprises. Just the same great stuff.
When those new to Julieta’s music hear this disc and experience what they’ve been missing, they will be wondering why they hadn’t already become fans long ago. For those who are new to Julieta’s great, latin-american, alt-pop tunes, I also highly recomment her prior albums, Si (my favorite, Latin Grammy winner in 2004), Limón y Sal (2 Grammy in 06/07), Bueninvento, and, of course, her live/acoustic disc with MTV Unplugged (2 Latin Grammies in 08), (including a not to be missed track that she recorded live with Brazilian pop-legend, Marisa Monte. Two such beautiful, talented singers on stage together = w0w!). Julieta has taken home no less than 5 Grammies and 3 MTV awards for her previous efforts, so, you know they are well worth a listen.

¿Ya dije? ¡JULIETA, TE QUIERO MUCHO!

Creation of Comunidad de Estados Latinoamericanos y Caribeños (Community of Latin American and Caribbean Nations)

with 2 comments

Acuerdan crear Comunidad de Estados Latinoamericanos y Caribeños – Yahoo! Noticias.

Oddly, I can’t find a single article about this in English yet.  This may be due to the fact the English speaking Canada and USA have been excluded, and our journalists are sleeping at the wheel.

In any case, in Playa del Carmen, México, leaders from 32 Latin American and Caribbean nations have agreed to build a coalition of Latin American and Caribbean nation states.

According to the Yahoo! article in Spanish:

El objetivo será proyectar a nivel global a la región con fundamento en el respeto al derecho internacional, igualdad de estados, respeto a los derechos humanos y la cooperación, señaló el presidente mexicano Felipe Calderón, anfitrión del encuentro.

The purpose of the community, according to Mexican President, Felipe Calderón, will be the advancement of member nations at a global level, based on respect of international law, equality among nations, respect of human rights, and cooperation.
The article mentions that a verbal spat ensued between Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez, and Colombia’s President Alejandro Uribe (nothing new there).
Raul Castro called the event “of historical transcendence”. Honduras was absent from the party, to Costa Rica’s chagrin.

Chilean President Elect Sebastien Piñera noted that it is important to understand that this new community is not meant to replace the Organization of American States, in which both Canada and the US are participants, as various members of this new organization have expressed dissatisfaction in the OAS’s capacity to resolve matters in the region.

The new organization will meet in Venezuela in 2011, and in Chile in 2012.
