As if we haven’t had enough earthquakes of late…Two are left dead after one of the strongest earthquakes in decades in México (article in Spanish).
The 7.2 earthquake in the North West of México near Mexicali occurred at 3:40 pm, Sunday, and shook buildings as far away as Los Angeles, CA, Phoenix, AZ, and Las Vegas, NV. At least 100 persons are reported injured.

Updates on Earthquake in Chile, relief efforts, etc.

with 2 comments

Estimates of deaths resulting from yesterday’s magnitude 8.8 earthquake in Chile, and consequent aftershocks, including an aftershock measured at 6.0 just this morning, have now climbed to over 700, with over 2 million displaced from their homes. (nytimes article)
Damages have been most severe in the region of Concepción, Chile’s second largest metropolitan center.

Various relief efforts have already begun, and opportunities established for those who wish to contribute.
Most convenient are those services set up whereby one may donate via text messages on a cell phone.
Here are a few:

  • Text the word “CHILE” to 25383 to donate $10 on behalf of the Habitat for Humanity
  • Text the word “CHILE” to 20222 to donate $10 on behalf of World Vision
  • Text the word “CHILE” to 52000 to donate $10 on behalf of the Salvation Army
  • Text the word “REBUILD” to 50555 to donate $10 on behalf of Operation USA’s Chile disaster relief efforts

Users can also donate money, United Airline miles, or other goods to Operation USA’s Chile disaster relief efforts at the group’s Web site.
Also, Google has set up a page on which one can donate to various efforts, and/or seek persons who are missing and/or offer information on those who are missing for those who may be seeking them.

More earthquakes, this time, Ecuador

Is the entire crust of the Earth coming apart?

Ecuador suffered a magnitude 5.1 earthquake (article in Spanish) at c. 5:26 GMT this morning.

Thankfully, there have been no injuries, no death, and no major damages reported as a result of the quake in Ecuador.
Here in New Haven, there are many, many Ecuadorans, and our city hosts a Consulado Ecuatoriano.

Pues, a mis amigos Ecuatorianos, les quiero mucho, mando abrazos.
¡Viva Ecuador!

By now, of course, everyone has heard that there’s been a brutal earthquake this morning in Santiago de Chile.

I found out early this morning when my mother called me, and asked if I had heard from my friend, beautiful and talented artist, Paholita, who resides in the Santiago.

I immediately attempted to phone Paholita, unsuccessfully, but have since heard from both her and her daughter, and they are well.
I have other friends in Santiago, too.

I’m pleased to announce that my friend Hector Mansilla of the Fundación GnuChile is alive and well.

I’m still waiting to hear from otros amigos chilenos.
To all in Chile, we send MUCHO AMOR.
Les mando abrazos a todos, les quiero mucho.
